Joely Richardson is best known for her roles as Julia McNamara on the FX series Nip/Tuck and Queen Catherine Parr in Showtime’s The Tudors, though she also makes regular appearances on theater stage productions.

Joely Richardson began her professional life on London’s stage where her Academy Award-winning actresses Vanessa Redgrave and Tony Richardson had made their names.

Joely Richardson’s Biography

Vanessa Redgrave is a renowned British actress known for her many performances both on film and theater stages. Additionally, she is known for her political activism; having participated in documentaries covering controversial subjects.

She began acting at an early age. Born January 30th, 1937, and growing up in London England, she attended the Central School of Speech and Drama before making her West End debut in 1954. Since then she has appeared in numerous plays resulting in six Academy Award nominations.

In the late 1970s, she became more actively engaged in politics, lending her voice to several documentaries and supporting both the PLO and IRA – even running unsuccessfully for Parliament as part of the Workers Revolutionary Party – while she produced films that expressed her views such as The Fifth War (1978), Occupied Palestine (1980) and Can’t They Put Humans First (1991).

Redgrave has made her mark as an actor through numerous film and television productions over time, garnering multiple awards for her performances. Some of Redgrave’s more noteworthy roles include Guinevere in the 1967 film Camelot; literary agent in the 1987 movie Prick Up Your Ears; Blanche Hudson from What Ever Happened to Baby Jane remake 1991 and many others such as A Man for All Seasons, The Bostonians and Howards End.

Joely Richardson is the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and actor Tony Richardson. She has one sister named Corin and an acting nephew named Micheal; all are also actors. Joely currently stars on the US TV show Nip/Tuck as well as recently appearing in Broadway productions of Joan Didion’s 2005 book “The Year of Magical Thinking”.

Joely began her career working at theatre productions such as Royal Shakespeare Company and Old Vic, before transitioning into television starring roles such as Ken Russell’s adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover; in film, she appeared in 101 Dalmatians and Event Horizon.

Beginning her career in the early ’90s, she has amassed an impressive list of film and television credits since that time – her first role being a murderess in Peter Greenaway’s Drowning by Numbers (1988). That same year she appeared as Connie Chatterley in a BBC TV miniseries adaptation of D. H Lawrence’s controversial novel of that name.

From there she went on to star in several movies such as 101 Dalmatians and the award-winning 1996 remake of The Patriot. However, her breakthrough role came in 2000, when director Charles Shyer recognized her resemblance to 18th-century queen Marie Antoinette and cast her in The Affair of the Necklace as its protagonist.

From 2003 to 2010, she played Julia McNamara on the FX network series Nip/Tuck, garnering critical acclaim and earning her a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actress. Additionally, she appeared as Katherine Tudor in Showtime historical drama The Tudors.

Richardson has appeared in multiple stage productions and was nominated for a Tony Award in 2005 for her portrayal of Countess Markievicz in Titanic: Blood and Steel TV miniseries. Additionally, she’s currently working with Christopher Walken to adapt Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman with her current project being an adaptation of it with Christopher Walken playing its title character. Richardson belongs to Women’s International Film Association as well as Screen Actors Guild membership and shares daughter Daisy Bevan with her former partner Tim Bevan who she divorced shortly thereafter.

Joely Richardson first began acting at three, when she appeared as an extra in her father’s 1968 film The Charge of the Light Brigade. Since then she has appeared in multiple television series and movies before transitioning into big-screen acting – such as playing an on-the-edge-of-nervous breakdown teacher on the 1989 television series Poirot and the fictional Finnish princess Anna in the 1991 film King Ralph. Additionally, Natasha Richardson – her sister actress-sister is Liam Neeson’s aunt while Jemma Redgrave (actress).
